Synthetic Control

A statistical method used in geo-lift testing that creates a mathematically constructed 'control' region by weighting a combination of non-test regions to match the test region's pre-test behavior. More accurate than simply comparing one city to another because it accounts for unique regional characteristics. The synthetic control effectively answers 'what would have happened in the test region if we hadn't changed anything?' by creating a virtual counterfactual from real data.

Why it matters

It is what makes a geo test work when no single region is a clean match for your test market, which is almost always.

In practice

Check the pre-period fit before trusting the result. If the synthetic control does not track your test region before the test started, it cannot tell you what happened during it.
