Budget
Performance Max
Google's AI-driven campaign type that runs across all Google surfaces (Search, Display, YouTube, Discover, Gmail, and Maps) from a single campaign. Uses Google's ML to optimize creative assets, audiences, and bidding across surfaces in real-time. Black-box optimization: you provide assets and goals, Google decides where and how to show them. Reporting is limited: you can't see which search terms triggered your ads or which placements drove conversions. Typically replaces Smart Shopping and captures a meaningful share of total Google spend for ecommerce brands.
Why it matters
It spans every Google surface with a single budget, so a strong aggregate can hide one surface doing all the work and another doing none.
In practice
Use asset group and channel reporting to see inside it. Without that split, PMax performance is a single number you cannot act on.
