AI Shopping Agent
An autonomous AI system — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini, Claude, or similar — that evaluates products, compares options, and makes purchase recommendations based on user queries. Unlike search engines that show links, shopping agents synthesize information from multiple sources and make a direct recommendation. They evaluate product data, reviews, brand authority, pricing, and availability to generate a response. There are no paid placements; recommendations are based on the agent's assessment of product quality and relevance.
Why it matters
It is the new intermediary between your catalogue and your buyer, and unlike a search engine it does not send traffic to browse. It returns an answer, and you are either in it or not.
In practice
Test the actual assistants your buyers use, with the queries they use, on a schedule. Nothing about your own site tells you whether you are in the answer.
